Few houseplants are quite as fascinating as the Venus flytrap. With its strange hinged leaves, tooth-like edges, and ability to capture insects in a matter of seconds, it almost seems more like a tiny animal than a plant.

But despite its unusual appetite, the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is very much a plant. It uses sunlight to produce its own energy through photosynthesis, just like your pothos, philodendron, or monstera.

The insects are something extra.

Understanding that distinction—and understanding why Venus flytraps evolved to eat insects in the first place—is one of the keys to successfully growing these remarkable plants.

What Is a Venus Flytrap?

The Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, is a small carnivorous perennial plant native to a relatively limited area of the coastal plains of North and South Carolina.

In its natural habitat, it grows in sunny, wet, nutrient-poor environments. These conditions help explain nearly everything about the plant’s unusual appearance and care requirements.

Because of this, their roots are unusually sensitive to mineral buildup.

Ordinary tap water may contain calcium, magnesium, salts, chlorine compounds, and other dissolved substances. Depending on your local water supply, repeated use of tap water can eventually damage or kill the plant.

The safest choices are generally:

  • Distilled water
  • Reverse-osmosis water
  • Rainwater collected from a clean source

Avoid assuming that bottled drinking water is appropriate. Many bottled waters contain added minerals.

How Much Water Does a Venus Flytrap Need?

Unlike many traditional houseplants, Venus flytraps should not be allowed to completely dry out between waterings.

Their natural environment is consistently moist.

One of the easiest indoor watering methods is the tray method.

Place the Venus flytrap’s pot in a shallow saucer or tray containing a small amount of mineral-free water. The growing medium can absorb moisture through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot.

The goal is consistently moist—not stagnant, decomposing soil.

It didn’t evolve in rich garden soil.

And it didn’t evolve inside a warm, humid terrarium.

It evolved in open, sunny, wet environments where the soil offered very little nutrition.

The plant’s famous insect-catching traps are its ingenious solution to that problem.
