Monstera deliciosa is one of the hottest indoor plants.

Not only as a houseplant but the iconic leaf pattern can be found on all types of home décor products- wall art, throw pillows, bedding, etc.

The list is endless.

As a horticulturist, I’m thrilled that this plant is receiving so much attention- it’s gorgeous!

The broad, tropical leaves make me instantly feel relaxed.

If you want to create a tropical paradise, this is the plant to have!

Its popularity has made it hard to find and a financial investment if you do purchase one.

A small, although beautiful and healthy plant, can be as much as $50.

It’s definitely worth the price if it’s the right plant for you.

As much as I like to encourage everyone to have plants and garden, I think it’s wise to be sure that gardening dollars are invested for success and maximum enjoyment.

Those Big, Beautiful Leaves

So, before you jump on the Monstera deliciosa bandwagon, here are a few considerations:

What makes the Monstera deliciosa so popular are the natural holes (the fancy term is fenestrations) and splits that develop in the leaves.

These appear on mature leaves that are approximately 12-24” in size.

If you buy a small plant, it may be some time before the leaves have this appearance.

And for the leaves to achieve a size of 12-24” the overall size of the plant will be considerably large as well.

A Monstera deliciosa can get 3-4’ wide and 5-6’ tall or larger depending on the growing conditions.

Be sure that you have the space for it in a well-lit area as it develops.

It will become a floor plant that will need a good bit of room for the leaves to spread out and show their beauty.

If you are tight on space whether at home or office, this may not be the best plant choice.

Monstera deliciosa is a vine, so as it grows, it would be best to support the main stem vertically.

This will prevent the plant from leaning and growing over the pot.

This is a simple step, but for some plant parents may require more time and attention than they would care to give.

Leaves can be trimmed to help shape the plant and maintain its size.

Displaying leaves in a tall, clear vase has also become popular with florists and interior designers.

A word of caution- the sap can cause dermatitis for people with sensitive skin.

A Word of Caution with Pets & Children

Also, all parts of the Monstera deliciosa (except the fruit) are poisonous to pets and humans.

Consider a faux plant if there is any danger of ingesting it.

Who should buy Monstera deliciosa:

  • You love it and will do anything to take care of it!
  • Have lots of space with light for it to grow and develop
  • Enjoy spending a little time each week maintaining your plants (staking, cleaning leaves, etc.)

Who should think twice about buying Monstera deliciosa:

  1. Space is tight for floor plants and not sure where it will go once it gets bigger
  2. The pets nibble on everything!
  3. You love plants, but you don’t have a lot of time primping and maintaining them each week
  4. The plant budget is tight and you would rather buy a handful of cool plants rather than just one
